The Architect Registration Examination also known as the ARE is the test that potential designers must take in order to become certified professional architects. The test assess candidates knowledge, skills and ability to provide various services required in the practice of architecture. The examination is prepared by the NCARB and has been adopted for use by all 54 U.S. member boards and the Canadian provincial architectural associations as the registration examination required of all candidates for architectural registration.
The exam will be updated in July 2008 to ARE 4.0. The latest version of the exam updates and improves the current format by combining graphic and multiple-choice content. ARE 4.0 integrates the exam format while emphasizing the problem-solving skills architects regularly use in day-to-day practice.
The changes in the ARE have been made in response to the results of the 1999 Practice Analysis survey conducted by NCAR. The study provided a comprehensive analysis of the architecture profession. Over the years, the Council has continuously worked toward improving the ARE's content, delivery, grading, and administration.
These changes will hopefully make the test more accurate and fair.
