Feng Shui is correctly pronounced as “fung shway”.  It describes the art of placement or the “art of flow” in interior decorating.  When directly translated from Chinese, it means “wind” and “water”.  The foundation of feng shui is based on Taoism’s chi thinking and the belief that everything is interconnected.  The three major concepts that should be followed when designing a room and considering Feng Shui are, the path of energy, the amount of windows the pastel color of the kitchen.

When decorating with feng shui is important to make sure that the path of energy, whether good or bad, cannot flow through your home. This happens when windows are directly across from each other, or doors are directly in front of a window. According to the philosophy of feng shui, when good energy flows through your home, you can have good luck one day and bad the next. When bad energy flows through your home, it is believed to cause more than just bad luck. It is also believed that although the bad energy can flow out of your home, it leaves its wrath and can be hard to fully get rid of.

The amount of windows greatly affects the feng shui of an interior design. Windows allow natural sunlight. According to the rules of feng shui, when a window is opened and natural sun light comes into a space only positive energy flows through the window. Although plenty of windows are important, they should not violate rule number one, the path of energy. So, as mentioned previously they should not be directly across from one another.

The color of the kitchen also affects the overall feng shui of the interior design.  It is important to carefully consider the feng shui of a kitchen because according to the principles of feng shui the color of the kitchen influences your family’s health.  Beige, yellow or pastel colored kitchens are ideal. These colors and the interior design of your project encourage a positive flow through your home.

According to the principles of feng shui, in order to achieve an optimized positive flow, the interior design of the project should minimize clutter. In order to achieve this, the room should begin empty and then it should be filled one piece at a time.  It is believed to be best to begin with the larger pieces (i.e. the couch, bed, television, etc.)  Each item placed in the space should be relevant to the area.  People should be able to flow through the room without running into anything. Some of the items may fit better in a different bedroom, or they may just be clutter that should be sold, donated or thrown away.  Not everything needs to be put back in the room. It is important to consider these things because if the room is cluttered it will slow down the positive energy.

Each individual has a symbol that is determined by their birthday.  This symbol should be placed in the middle of the living room in form of an object.  A ba-qua can be used to determine an individuals color, earth element (water, wood, fire, earth) and direction.  This information should all be considered when choosing an object for the middle of the living room and the overall interior design of the space.

These are just some of the steps that you can take when considering decorating your interior and applying the principles of feng shui.
